Meet Mat Man!

Last week we introduced our friend Mat Man!  Mat Man is a fun friend from our Handwriting Without Tears curriculum who helps teach us how to draw pictures and how to write letters and numbers.

When we first met Mat Man he was just a bunch of pieces; big lines, little lines, big curves, and little curves.

After we sorted all of our pieces into like stacks we began to build Mat Man!

Mat Man has one head so that he can think.

Mat Man has two eyes so he can see, one mouth so he can taste, and two ears so he can hear.

Mat Man has one nose so he can smell, one body to hold everything inside, and two arms so he can reach.

Mat man has two legs so he can stand.

Finally, Mat Man has two hands so he can touch and two feet so he can walk.

After meeting Mat Man we used his pieces to build our special letters!

Next we got to play with Play-doh and make our own pieces to build our special letters!

After building our letters multiple ways, we practiced our pencil grip in preparation for writing letters in a couple of weeks.  We used half sized crayons for our activity, this helps us to use only our thumb, index finger, and ring finger when we write.  We learned a fun song about how to hold our writing utensils that tells us "My thumb is bent, pointer points to the top, and tall man uses his side.  I tuck my last two fingers in and take them for a ride!"

In addition to all of our fun special letter activities this week we also talked about our Five Senses!  Our favorite activities of the week were our lesson on touch and taste.

For our touch lesson we each picked an item and had to use descriptive words to explain what it was to our friends without showing them our item.  Rough, smooth, hard, soft, bumpy, were some of our words we used!

For our taste lesson we tried red, yellow, and green apples.  We voted on which apple we liked best and PreK B prefers green, Granny Smith Apples!

For our first Apple Treat of the month we had apple nachos!  Students were able to add toppings of their choice: sprinkles, chocolate and caramel sauce, chocolate chips, and whipped cream!

We started decorating our room with apples, our first craft for the month was making stained glass apples for our windows!

Our friend Eli celebrated his 5th birthday!  Happy Birthday sweet friend!
