Happy Halloween, Pumpkin!

Happy Halloween from the little "pumpkins" of PreK B!

Leading up to Halloween we read many silly books about the ghouls, goblins, and monsters that come out to Trick or Treat on Halloween.  Our favorite book was Go Away, Big Green Monster!

We first learned that green is a secondary color made from blue and yellow.  We had so much fun mixing the paint to make our monsters!

Next, we added all of the pieces to our monsters as we retold the story.

The Big Green Monster has...
Two yellow eyes, a long, bluish, greenish nose,
a big red mouth with sharp white teeth,
two little squiggly ears, and scraggly purple hair.
We told the Big Green Monster to GO AWAY! and not to come back until we said so!

Another part of our Halloween preparation was learning all about pumpkins!

We learned about the pumpkin's life cycle and that there are different pumpkins for eating and for carving jack-o-lanterns.  We learned that pumpkins can be little and fit in the palm of our hands or can grow big enough to make a one man boat out of!  Did you know pumpkins can float!?

After learning all of these cool things about pumpkins we carved our very own classroom jack-o-lantern with PreK A!  We loved getting to see and touch all of the seeds, pulp, and flesh of the pumpkin in real life.

We decided to carve a happy jack-o-lantern!

After carving a real jack-o-lantern we painted and decorated silly jack-o-lanterns!

And we can't forget the "stained glass" pumpkins we made for the windows.
PreK B students are definitely the pick of the patch!

Our favorite poem about pumpkins was "Five Little Pumpkins."
We created our own gates and drew pumpkins on top of each post!

When learning about the letter G we made ghosts to hang from the ceiling.  It made our room extra spooky when they would catch the air blowing from the vents, it was like they were flying!

The best part of Halloween is all of the candy!  So we took a classic Halloween treat, candy corn, and used it for a graphing activity.  We sorted, counted, and charted each of three types of candy corn.  Of course we enjoyed a piece or two at the end for a job well done!  :)

Our bulletin board for the month had creepy crawly spiders "Dropping by to wish you a Happy Halloween!"

Our bulletin board couldn't have been more perfect because Dane's grandma brought us a tarantula from the Museum of Discovery to see!

These adorable spiders are the only ones I want to see in PreK-B!

We can't forget our trip to the 8th Grade's Mad Scientist Laboratory!
We got to participate in 5 cool experiments and Trick-or-Treat on our way out.  Our favorite experiment was definitely the smoke cannon that blew cups off of our heads!

We ended the month's long celebration with our Pumpkin Hunt at the Benedict House!
At the Benedict House we played glow in the dark ring toss and pin the hat on the witch, made fun witches, created cute Halloween jack-o-lantern votive jars, and hunted for pumpkins!

Thank you to all of the parents for sending pumpkins and snacks and working the different stations to make our Pumpkin Hunt a success!
