B is for Banana Pianos and Butter!

The latest invention kit that Holy Souls has on loan from the Museum of Discovery is called Makey Makey.  Makey Makey kits are a fun way to learn about electricity and can turn everyday conductive objects into video game controllers, pianos, anything with a "key"!

Our two 6th grade classes took turns coming down with their teacher, Mrs. Wingfield, and taught us all about how to make circuits.  We used the Chrome Books, Makey Makey kits, bananas, and our own bodies to make pianos!

We listened to the big kids play songs like Mary Had A Little Lamb and had fun making up our own songs and sound patterns.

Thank you 6th grade for teaching us about this scientific principle in an extra fun way!

Our second B activity was to make butter!
We started with a large mason jar, 1 cup of heavy whipping cream, and one blue bear.

We put put the heaving whipping cream and the bear into the mason jar and began to shake the jar as hard as we could.

The bear served as an agitator and made the heavy whipping cream very frothy.

Next, more shaking!

The heavy whipping cream was now thick like cool whip.

Then, you guessed it, more shaking!

Now the heavy whipping cream was thick and curdled like cottage cheese.

Finally, our last round of shaking!

Our butter had solidified and the extra cream had separated.

We scooped out our butter and formed it into a ball with a spoon before placing it in the fridge to cool while we napped.  After nap we spread the butter on crackers and gave it a try.  We all gave it two thumbs up!
