Let's Learn All About A!

This week we started our letter of the week curriculum with the letter A!
After discussing all different kinds of foods, animals, vehicles, and objects that start with A we brainstormed and made our own A-list.

We learned that A is a vowel and makes 2 sounds, long and short a.  We also talked about vowels being "sticky" letters that help keep the letters in our words together.  We took time to look at our names and see who all had a "sticky" a to help hold their name together!

A very important part in our letter of the week curriculum is learning how to write our letters correctly.  To do this we complete Rainbow Write each week in a whole group setting.  We trace our letter of the week with each color of the rainbow and end up with beautiful capitol and lowercase letters!

This week we began our Alphabet Journals! We followed directions to cut and paste an Apple and drew our own A item for our first two entries.

This week we learned all about making patterns!  The first two patterns we learned about were AB patterns and ABC patterns.  We made AB pattern apple bracelets and worked in small groups to make ABC patterns of three objects that start with A: Arkansas, Award, and Angel.  Look at these hoots and their awesome patterns!

Our shape of the week was the Triangle!  After learning that a triangle always has three sides and three corners we practiced drawing triangles on the smart board.  We also took time to sort circles, squares, and triangles, the three shapes we have learned about this year.

Our favorite apple activity of the week was reading Ten Apples Up On Top and seeing how many apples we could hold on our own heads.  Not real apples of course!  We used apples that spelled our names to see how many apples we could hold up on top.

This week in religion we learned all about Noah and God's promises to him.  Noah followed God's directions to build the Arc and take in the animals even when others called him silly.  In turn God kept his promises to Noah and kept his family safe during the flood and provided a new life for him after the flood waters dried.  Mrs. Milton taught us that God sent a rainbow to Noah as a reminder of his promise to never flood the earth again and when we see a rainbow we know that God still keeps this promise to us.

We also continued talking about what it means to be a good friend.  Mrs. Milton shared with us a great example about using hurtful words with a tube of toothpaste.  Just like you cannot put tooth paste back in the tube after it comes out you cannot take back hurtful words once they are said.

Mrs. Milton also used paper hearts as another example about using hurtful words.  Using hurtful words is like crumpling up a piece of paper.  Even though an apology helps smooth out our friends heart it can never be completely fixed.

This week we had two very fun school wide activities.  The first was our Red and White free dress day and pep rally!  We loved cheering on all of the fall sports teams and watching the cheerleaders perform!

Our second event of the week was participating in National Run at School Day.  We got to run with our 4th grade friends after lunch and had so much fun!

Our apple treat of the week was apple pie cups!  We started by making a graham cracker crust.

Then we added our apple filling.

Finally, we topped it off with yummy whipped cream!

This treat was a big hit!

This week we had our first Hoot Of The Week, Thomas!
We had so much fun learning all about Thomas and his favorite things, enjoying yummy Triscuits and reading his favorite book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Suess!
