I Am Special

Last week we talked about many of the things that make us special!

We started our week off by sharing things that we can do that make us special!
Running fast, going fishing, and doing gymnastics were popular answers!

Next, we read the story Chrysanthemum about a tiny mouse with a BIG name.  After reading, we discussed our own names, their lengths, and Mrs. Milton even taught us what each of our names means during a religion lesson!

We even got to build our names with special letter tiles!

Another thing that makes us special is being a boy or a girl.  We participated in our first smart board lesson of the year and sorted ourselves into boys and girls!

Next we made our own portraits and added them to our boy/girl chart!

Our hair is another thing that makes us special!  Some friends have short hair while others have long hair, some have straight hair while others have curly hair, and some of our friends are brunette while others are blonde.  We played a fun smart board activity where we matched our hair to our picture!

Can't forget to chart our class hair colors!

Our eyes help us to see and their unique colors make up special.  This year our friends have either blue or brown eyes!

We learned about the concept of growth and change over time.  We know we are bigger than when we were born and we got to see just how much we have grown!  I wonder how tall our friends will be when they graduate from HSS after 8th grade!

Our birthdays are another thing about us that make us special.  No two friends in our class have the same birthday so we all get to celebrate our own special day!

The last characteristic that we discussed that makes us special is our hand prints and our finger prints.  We were all amazed that God created everyone's finger prints to be unique!

This week we continued learning about appropriate behavior in school.  We read two books about a boy named David who just can't follow the rules.  We discussed not wanting to be like David and made our own David craft to remind us to do the right thing.

Look at all of these "mean" Davids.

Another fun activity that we got to participate in was watching the Eclipse!  We were able to live stream the feed from NASA straight into our classrooms.  What a fun experience to share together!

Thanks for stopping by the blog, see you all next week!

This week we learned all about our classroom rules, expectations, and procedures.
After learning all about our classroom we got to play in centers!

We also took a tour of our campus and met some of the important people who help make our school run and our days fun!
We visited the church where we will attend mass.

We met Mrs. Sorsby, our librarian.

We met Mrs. Miller, our PE teacher.

We met Mrs. Suski and Mrs. Korte, our secretary and nurse.

We met Mrs. Dobbins, our principal.

We visited the Allen Center where we will eat lunch.

We also met Mr. Verlin and Mrs. Charlotte, our school cooks!

We ended our week with a fun craft about Chester the Racoon who is the star of the book The Kissing Hand.  Chester was afraid of going to school for the first time but with a little encouragement from mom and a kiss on the hand he had a great first day at school.  It's a wonderful book that I encourage all of you to read sometime and let your little one help you read it!

We had a great first week together and are looking forward to a wonderful year!
