I Am SPECIAL!

This week we learned all about the things that make us special!  From physical characteristics to talents we possess, everything about us makes us special.

We started by listing things we can do that make us special!

Next, we talked about the two big groups in our classroom, boys and girls.  We then made self portraits and charted our classmates to compare the number of boys and girls!

Then we looked at our names!  Each of our friends has their own special name but they can share similar characteristics such as same beginning letter and total number of letters.

After charting all of our names we grouped ourselves by total number of letters in our names!
Cade, Ella, and Ryan have 4 letters in their names.
Lilly, Josie, and Jacob have 5 letters in their names.
Andrew, Gaston, Parker, Collin, and Olivia have 6 letters in their names.
Braxton, Charlie, and Jessica have 7 letters in their names.
Samantha has 8 letters in her name.
Charlotte has 9 letters in her name.

We also talked about our birthdays and all of the fun things we do to celebrate.  After graphing all of our birthdays we discovered that 2 of our friends have the same birthday, Parker and Ella, but they celebrate in different ways and that makes them special!

We also talked about our hair and how the color makes us special!
We have one friend with black hair.
We have six friends with brown hair.
We have nine friends with blonde hair.

Another thing that makes us special is how tall we are!  Although we are all 4 and 5 years old we all grow at different rates.  We found out that Lilly is our shortest friend and Olivia is our tallest.  Even though they are not the same height, they are best buddies!

Another thing that makes us special are our eyes!
We have one friend with green eyes.
We have four friends with brown eyes.
We have eleven friends with blue eyes.
Look at all of those sweet, blue eyed beauties!

After charting our eye color and grouping together for pictures we played a game on the Smart Board...can you find your eyes!?

We ended the week by talking about the one characteristic we possess that no one else in the entire world has, our fingerprints!  By God's design our fingerprints are unique and that makes us SPECIAL!

We had fun taking a tour to meet all of the wonderful people around our school who help us.
Ms. Ellie is our Librarian and we will visit her once a week starting on Monday.

Mrs. Palazzi is our Technology Coordinator and makes sure our computer and Smart Board are always in tip top shape to help us learn.

Mrs. Korte is our school nurse and help us when we get sick or hurt and Mrs. Suski is our school secretary and helps keep track of our lunch count and attendance.

Mrs. Handloser is our Assistant Principal and Mrs. Dobbins is our Principal and they both help keep our school safe by making sure we all follow the school rules.

We stopped by the church and visited where we will be attending school mass starting in October.

Mrs. Reynolds stopped by our classroom and we had our first Spanish lesson.  We learned how to say Hello, Good Morning, Here I Am, and Goodbye in Spanish.

Mr. Legris is our Music Teacher and we had a great time learning the music room rules and freeze dancing.

We enjoyed learning about and playing in centers.
Cade reading Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes in Reading Center.

Jessica and Gaston building cities and trains in Blocks Center.

Parker and Charlotte assembling silly creatures in Puzzles and Games Center.

Ryan and Charlie listening to stories in Listening Center.

Lilly and Jacob creating beautiful paintings in Art Center.

Josie and James Clay exploring in Science Center.

Collin and Ella patterning and sorting in Math Center.

Samantha and Andrew sharing a meal in House Keeping.

Olivia and Braxton practicing their handwriting in Writing Center.

After learning about our classroom and school rules we read the story David Goes To School, a story about a boy who couldn't follow any school rules.  After deciding we didn't want to be "Davids" we created our own David craft to hang in the classroom and remind us to follow the rules.

We took a break to monkey around and decorate our bulletin board.  Look Who's Swinging Into PreK B, the cutest monkeys at Holy Souls!

On Friday we got play in the Gym.  We had lots of fun running, playing with our PreK A friends, and the biggest hit of the morning was the big bucket of Beanie Babies.

To end our week together we read the story The Kissing Hands, a story about Chester raccoon who was scared to go to school for the first time because he would be sad to be away from his mother.

After reading the story we discussed our feelings about school on the first day,

and made our own Chester raccoons.

In the story Chester's mother kissed his hand as a reminder that she was always with him and Chester had a great first day of school.  Just like Chester, we overcame any fears of school once we met our friends and saw how much fun we would be having at school.

Mrs. Straessle and I sent each child home on Friday with their own "kissing hand" to let them know how proud we were of their first week at school and how we can't wait to start a new week together on Monday!
