Apples, Apples, Everywhere!

Now that October is here, we are transition to all things fall and pumpkins but we can't forget to share our apple adventures we had during the month of September!

We started our month by meeting our friend Mat Man!  Mat Man is a fun friend from our Handwriting Without Tears curriculum who helps teach us how to draw pictures, how to write letters and numbers, and what body parts are associated with our 5 senses.

When we first met Mat Man he was just a bunch of pieces; big lines, little lines, big curves, and little curves.  After we sorted all of our pieces into like stacks we began to build Mat Man!

We sang our Mat Man song to help us build his body.
Mat Man has one head so that he can think, two eyes so he can see, two ears so he can hear, one mouth so he can taste, and one nose so he can smell.   Mat Man has one body to hold everything inside, his heart, his lungs, and his tummy.  Mat Man has two arms so he can reach, two hands so he can clap, two legs so he can stand, and two feet so he can walk.
We also made up our own silly verse so Mat Man could have some hair on top of his head!

After building Mat Man as a class we built our own people out of pasta noodles!  The noodles helped us to use descriptive words like big, little, long, short, straight, and curved.

One of our mathematics concepts in September was patterning.  We worked as a class to first build AB patterns on the smart then we worked in pairs to build our own AB, ABC, and AABB patterns.

Next we worked individually to color AB pattern apple bracelets.

Our favorite silly story of the month was 10 Apples Up On Top.  After reading the story we built our names with apples on top of our own heads.  How many apples can you "hold" on top?!

What is an apple unit without yummy treats?!
First we tasted red, yellow, and green apples and charted which color we liked best.

Most of our friends loved the apples!

A few did not and gave us their best "yuck" faces!

Each Friday of the month we made a different apple snack.  We made crockpot applesauce, graham cracker apple pies, rice krispie apples, and our class favorite apple nachos.  I think the sprinkles and chocolate sauce won them over!

Stay tuned for all of our fun October activities!

Donuts with Dad

Earlier this month we got to enjoy Donuts with Dad before school thanks to our wonderful PTO!
This event was previously a part of Catholic Schools Week but now has its own special day.  We all love our dads very much and we are so thankful for the time together with the dads that were able to come and eat a donut with us.

Look at all of these happy faces!

Reading Buddies!

A very special activity we get to participate in is Reading Buddies!

On the first and third Wednesdays of the month we are visited by 4th grade students who read us stories before we lay down for nap.  We will complete fun activities together for Christmas, Valentines Day, and other holidays and events throughout the year.  It is so sweet to watch these friendships develop over the year and continue on until our buddies graduate from 8th grade.  This is an especially fun year for me because students from my first class 6 years ago are now the 4th grade buddies!  :)

Let's meet the buddies!
